If you have an unavoidable conflict the the morning of May 12, please contact us to set up an alternate time. The audition will last only about 10 minutes for each person.
The in-person audition will consist of three brief components: A voice/range check, a sightsinging excerpt, and singing your part to the four-part (SATB) hymn provided below.
1. We will determine your vocal range and quality with a series of vocal exercises.
2. You will sing a short sightreading excerpt. You will have a minute to look over it before singing. You can write in solfege during your practice time. After the practice minute, you will be given the starting pitch, and you will sing it a cappella. Here are the elements you'll see:

- It will be eight measures long
- Possible keys of the excerpt will be C, F, G, D, or Bb
- Possible time signatures will be 3/4 or 4/4.
- Rhythmic values will include quarter notes, half notes, dotted halves, and eighth notes.
3. You will sing your part on LYRICS to the hymn “For Thy Dear Saints" in a quartet. For example, if you are auditioning as a tenor, you will sing the tenor part (while a soprano, alto, and bass sing). Here are all the materials for this portion (sheet music PDF and an mp3 of the full mix). This will also be done a cappella. Mr. Olson will provide hard copies of this music if you are unable to print it off yourself.

Mr. Olson and Ms. Bennett will adjudicate your audition, listening for accuracy and tone quality. Past performance in choir and music classes will also be considered.
Finally, note that even if you have a great audition, you may be placed on a waiting list if your voice type is over-balanced in Cardinal Singers. Having equal SATB parts is very important, so don't get discouraged if that's the case.
